Starbucks Book: Where will you be five years from today?

by marla on December 5, 2008

“Where will you be five years from today?”

So begins an creative book and journal on sale now at Starbucks. I couldn’t resist!

“Five Years…260 weeks…1,825 days…2,333,000 minutes. What will you do with it? What could you do with it?”

The book uses typography, inspirational quotes and worksheet style pages to get us to take a moment to step out of time. Do you know what I mean? Some days the time just flows by, and we scarcely notice its passing except to gape in horror at the calendar counting down the days before Christmas. This little journal reminds us of what we never should have fogotten: you must live your life on purpose. And while it doesn’t bring faith into the equation other than as a category to consider, I will. God has a purpose for your life:not just the big overall purpose, but the daily one-miniscule-step-at-a-time portion. Choose wisely.

So why am I talking about this book now, which is so suited to a New Year’s post?

David and I took the journal to dinner with us the other night and just flipped through its pages. We looked at the pages on mission statements (got that), dreams, travel, thinking big, thinking specific, volunteering, changing the world. The pages acted as a springboard to our discussions, prompting us to re-evaluate how we approach Christmas and even our Christmas gifts to each other and our family.

That’s why I’m writing this today.

Using this book or some other springboard, stop and THINK about your Christmas this year. There are NO perfect gifts, but there are a few perfect opportunities in life. The little Starbucks journal helped me slow down long enough to make sure I don’t miss a few of them.

Just a few lines to give you a hint of what’s inside:

  • Choose your mission
  • If you don’t have a dream, how can you have a dream come true?
  • What will you do with your talents? Talent is God’s gift to you. What you do with it is your gift back.
  • Have adventures
  • Think Big
  • Who are you grateful for? Tell them
  • When was the last time you did something for the first time?
  • How will you change the world?

Where can I get the journal? I’ve never seen books being sold in Starbucks.

I really like the idea of using the journal topics as a conversation driver with your spouse. I am going to have to check the book out and take it to dinner one night (sans kids) and let it drive the conversation and self and family evaluation. Great post!

Next to our whole bean offerings and Bodum press selection, I think that book (which I still have 4 in stock!!!) is one of the best items we currently sell.

Where can I get the journal? I have one copy and looking for additional for Christmas gifts.

As Jeremy, my fave barista said, I got mine at the store. I’ve been spectacularly unsuccessful searching online for it!

As a kid five years was an eternity now they are gone before we know it. Think of the learning, development, and things you experienced for the 1st time between 5-10 10-15 15-20 soon after that we get into a routine of work and chores and monontony of everyday life. The challenge is to carve out some time and continue to find new experiences that will help you to develop and learn.

Do you think Borders sells it?

Where can I purchase 10 copies of the book “Where will you be five years from today?” I would like to give this to my group for Christmas.

Thanks
Patty

How about really thinking BIG?

Starbucks Journal: $20
Starbucks annual coffee fees: $640
Not letting a book and a brand tell you what to do with your life: Priceless

I just came across this blog…

I saw the book in my local Starbucks and really liked it. Almost all of the stores in our city sold out within 3 days. According to Amazon, the book’s release date is January 5th, 2009. Wish they had gotten them out before Christmas!

I just called another store and had them put 3 on hold for me… it’s a great book for me and my 20-something friends to talk about.

The book’s author is Dan Zadra and it’s published by Compendium. You can buy them directly on the site at . Personally, I think it’s worth calling your local stores and avoiding the shipping fees.

Merry Christmas!

Hello everyone,
I saw this in Decatur, GA and they too said that this was the second shipment. There is a link on amazon but it has not been populated yet. If I remember correctly, you can sign up for them to tell you when it is in stock so that you can order it there.

Good Luck

This book was given to everyone at a retreat we were facilitating about 3 weeks ago. I opened it up and started reading and was so inspired and on fire about it that I immediately went to amazon to order a couple as gifts, but it was nowhere to be found. The guy who bought them for the group said he had to go to 5 different Starbucks to get enough for our group of 22, and they had been either sold out or were not aware of it in all the stores I checked in my area (southern Calif). I spoke with a Starbucks corporate guy who happened to be at the store and overheard me asking about it, and he said he would call me when he got more in in the next couple of days, and I thought for sure I would not hear from him, but he did call me! It was after I had already found a couple at another store, but that was nice he made the effort. Just ask a manager to let you know when the books arrive – they make great Christmas gifts! (At least I think they do!)

I just typed in this link:
but the book is red with a big 5 on the front…
I bought the last copy from Starbucks yesterday for a commencement gift and was looking to buy more, but it was a light green book… almost a hemp like material.
Does anyone know if it is the same book that Starbucks sells?

marla December 14, 2008 at 2:14 pm

Yes, I believe it is the same book. Mine is the light green version, too.

ApostleMD December 23, 2008 at 11:12 pm

The light green one is the same as the red one…I just heard about it 2 hours ago… only wish it wasn’t sold out of every Starbucks in southeast CT… (at least it feels that way)… :-)

inspired December 28, 2008 at 2:45 pm

the red one is actually the “book” the green version is the “journal” Still looking for my own copy of the journal… if anyone finds it please post link. Thanks!!!

…and see ya in 5 years :)

i love this journal! i feel like this has been one of the best purchases I’ve made for the whole year. It’s completely inspired me.
my top values are: compassion, family, kindness, creativity, and spirituality. thinking about my life in terms of those values makes me evaluate each little decision i make.

BTW, I had a wonderful McMuffin Monday.

destinedforwhat January 7, 2009 at 12:32 am

i got this as a christmas gift and thought it would be a great gift idea for a few friends of mine. the few starbucks i have been to have had zero. i have checked out the link in a previous comment and it is the same thing, different look. but it is also $5 more than at starbucks and i am sure there is shipping costs involved as well. have you heard if this is just a one time special for starbucks? lol just looking for a way to save a couple dollars in these tough times :)

Where can I buy this journal they are sold out in the starbucks stores

BLM January 14, 2009 at 3:59 pm

Called the company that produces this book. They told me the version for Starbucks was a limited edition version. Except for the cover, it is exactly the same as the one you can see on some online retailers such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble… and does, indeed, feature journal pages just as the one for Starbucks did. So mystery solved there… it’s one and the same. B&N tells me it’ll be available 1/28/09.

Leon February 3, 2009 at 12:08 pm

I saw this at the Dallas, TX store. The cover is a limited edition cover, unlike the one on Amazon.

destinedforwhat February 4, 2009 at 9:23 pm

all the barnes and nobles in my area are SOLD OUT. i tried ordering from Overstock as a pre-order. It was supposed to be available 1/28, and when i contacted them today about the fact that it had not yet shipped, they couldnt find much info on the item, and refunded my money. so now i am going to try amazon or the actual company that produces them. seems everyone wants this book :)

Hello everyone! I’m Zach, a fellow Compendium fan (though you didn’t know what to call it, even!) and I just wanted to share relevant links with anyone still reading this board since Five seems to have caused some confusion.

The company, Compendium, Inc., is a Seattle-based small business too awesome to describe — you have to check their website to see for yourself, live-inspired.com — offering TONS and TONS of inspirational and often green-friendly literature as well as personal discovery tools (like the Five book; or the follow-up, One; both available on the website). They started with window-cards, individual quotation cards for corporate events and motivational products, but have become SO much more in the last two decades — personal favorites are Five, the Tickle Monster (for kids), and the Lunch Mail series of window cards (also for kids). Come to think of it, their notebooks and journaling supplies aren’t half-bad either (and it’s beautiful stuff, too!).

I’m good family friends with the president (and author of Five), Dan Zadra, and have been in love with the company since we first met Dan and the rest of the team. Forever Remembered — a cancer remembrance book — is dedicated to my father, Jeff, who passed away of brain cancer at the age of 45 . . . just one of many kind gestures and contributions Dan and everyone at Compendium make on a regular basis. If it isn’t clear already — go check them out!

Favorite quote from Compendium: Dan’s daughter, Rose Zadra, at age 6: “If you love somebody, hurry up and show it.” Check the website and try not to cry – really incredible stuff.

So wish that Starbucks would reprint this every graduation season. I have posted to My Ideas, lets hope it sounds like a good idea to Starbucks :-)
