I am an addict.
There…I feel better having confessed to you all. Here is what I’m addicted to, not in any particular order:
- I am addicted to Starbucks Chocolate banana Vivanos with a shot of espresso and a shot of energy. Great way to start my day.
- I’m addicted to reading…lately books about community, global initiatives, and — always — coffee.
- I’m addicted to time. Specifically, I love to have time scheduled in my day to stop and think, to be out in the community, to bring the community home to my house. I love feeling like there is an abundance of time.
- I’m addicted to giving. Believe it or not, this can be a negative. I was in a position this week to go out and buy an item I need (not a large item, maybe $50) or borrow it. That’s when I discovered my addiction to always being the giver, not often the receiver. As a spiritual discipline, I’m going to borrow the item.
- I’m addicted to my own curiosity. An older man with a cane and a straggly mop of gray hair sat down next to me at Starbucks the other day. I couldn’t categorize him, but the quest to figure him out entertained me all morning. he brought a used coffee cup to reuse (no, not a reusable one, just a regular paper one). He carried an reusable grocery bag, filled with things like that cup and — what else? I can’t see! Was he an environmentally conscious eccentric or a homeless man with good taste? Will I ever know? Does it matter?
- I’m addicted to you..to writing on this blog and twittering and facebooking. It adds a depth to my life I never imagined before.
Yes, I’m an addict. The problem is — as all addicts know — when you do not have access to your addiction of choice, you can get grumpy and out of sorts. We’re throwing our youngest daughter a birthday bash (16!) tomorrow, and all addictions have had to take second place to action for the party. I can’t read about the community…it’s time to create one for my daughter.
What are you addicted to?

awesome! I’m an addict too…I’m afraid I have a few more negative ones than you, though…Have fun at the B-day Party!
this made me think: “I’m addicted to giving. . . . As a spiritual discipline, I’m going to borrow the item.”
I am not so good at asking for help or needing. Good to think of borrowing as a discipline.
