Mount Washington v. Sailboat: Let’s Play Chicken!

Our oldest daughter, Kylie, turned 20 last week. Her gift was a trip with two of her friends back up here to Boston. It makes me happy that my daughter’s request is time for even more community…girl after my own heart! Since I know that she loves to sail, I signed all five of the girls on this trip up for a sailing lesson in New Hampshire. It was a great moment watching them sail off with their instructor, Ian, to learn a little more and experience a little more.

Ian is also an instructor at a youth sailing camp, and during the two hours spent with my girls, he regaled them with stories — horror and otherwise — of this time with the kids. Our family favorite is the sheer moxie of these pint sized sailors. They are equiped with tiny little Sailfish (or is that Sunfish?) boats which they love to roll over at whim. Apparently, they also love to play chicken with the Mount Washington. Who will blink? As you can see, the Mount isn’t likely to blink first. Ian thinks this is hysterical.

Listening later to the chicken with the Mount story, I realized that I am a little like that teeny Sailfish. Sometimes I think I play chicken with God, thinking that He’s going to blink first. He doesn’t, you know. Sometimes like the Mount he makes a pre-planned turn, but  setting my course contrary to His wishes doesn’t cause him to reevaluate the course of the universe. God wins. It’s really simple, if only I would learn it.

And I’m a bit slow, I’m reading this story going ‘how are they playing chicken with Mount Washington? that makes no sense’ before the brunette kicked in (rather than the blonde) and realised the Mount Washington is the bigger boat in the 2nd picture and THAT’S what they play chicken with.
